Spirit-led listening and wondering create safe places for people to bring their real selves into the light. When they do, they usually reveal a specific need that requires a divine solution.
Jesus told his disciples not to worry about what to say or how to say it because the Holy Spirit would give them what they needed when they needed it (Matthew 10:19-20).
It’s a good idea to start the day with this prayer, “Lord Jesus, as I interact with others today, help me to see them as you do.”
I often feel like I want to increase the quantity and quality of my spiritual conversations and don’t always feel competent or confident enough to even begin a spiritual conversation.
One way we have been practicing is by going out every Saturday morning to pray for people on a street corner here in Chicago. We go out in twos, and approach people walking by. We usually say something like, “We are here to pray for people today, is there anything we can pray for you about?” We also offer them a cup of coffee and just get to know them. We tell them that God loves them and wants to touch them.
We also give out children’s Bible books to any kids we happen to see and they usually are very excited about it! It’s a great way to plant seeds in a family!
We have been doing this for about a year and a half. It’s amazing how many times people open up about what is going on, and receive prayer. We have seen many people healed and many times people cry when we tell them God loves them. We try to learn their names so we can call them by name the next time we see them.
One of our best stories from a Saturday was when we met Praveen from India. He was so surprised when we said we wanted to pray for him. He told us that he and his wife work at a Subway restaurant almost everyday and take the bus. Raghu who is also from India was with me that day. At one point, Raghu said, “I used to be a Hindu, but now I follow Jesus.” Praveen said, “How did you do that?” Then Raghu told him how he began to pray to Jesus and how Jesus answered his prayers. Twice now, we have gone to Subway to visit him and his wife and to have lunch. Last week, we also brought another friend from our team on Saturdays. They were so honored that we visited them! They are not followers of Jesus yet, but they are very open to us and to Jesus. Rakhi (his wife) is now pregnant so they are open to prayer for the baby too! They try to come and see us on their way to work each week!
You may be thinking, “I can’t do that,” but you can as the Spirit guides you to who is open that you can talk to! Let’s encourage each other to do the stuff! (Heb 10:24-25).
Our prayers are with you as you attempt to have spiritual conversations in your everyday life as you are out and about. Feel free to share any stories you have!
